Tornæmi þeirra Pumblechooks og herra Hubbles á eigin dauðleika birtist í því
hvernig þeir tala og láta í erfisdrykkjunni; með sama hætti birtist næmi eða tor-
næmi okkar hinna á okkar eigin mennsku, dauðleika, hverfúUeika, og siðferðilega
eiginleika, í því hvernig við tölum, hvað við drögum fram og hvað við sjáum sem

Abstract
Morality, Thought and Imagination
The role of the imagination in ethical thought has not received much attention
from philosophers, at least not in recent times. The most popular philosophical
account of moral thinking sees it almost wholly as thinking about moral theories,
principles, and the application of principles to facts. In this essay, I try to show
that ethics without due consideration for the imagination is deficient. I discuss
the importance of the imagination for thought in general, and for our sense of
values and pleasure in particular. Then I consider the role of the imagination in
our moral life, especially in our relations with other human beings and with our-
selves. I use Cora Diamond’s ideas on the concept of a human being to show that
we need the imagination to become aware of ourselves as leading a human life,
and thus, to acknowledge our shared human fate and responsibility.
