whose death and whose body’s return to Holar are both dated.
Such an interest could well point to Gunnar, for bis wife was a
granddaughter of Jon Arason. It looks as if, in Gunnar, we have at
least got very near the origin of the Ms.
There are also a few entries in the calendar which have been
added after the main body of the Ms. Besides the anonymous
birthday noted on July 26th, which may be Amgrimur’s, a neat,
strong hånd has added under January 4th:
Andlats dagwr Thorlaks bf/sfcitps
Skula sonar*
This entry is not given a year, but the event occurred in 1656, and
the hånd does not correspond with Arngrlmur’s. It might be a
good guess to suggest that Hrolfur Sigur&sson, Arngrimur’s father,
is responsible for this note, for Bishop Borlåkur was his brother-in-
law, and he is quite likely to have been the owner of the Ms. at
the time. There is also a note added for November 15th:
fiell hola kirka 1624
i Hialltadal.*
This is in a large and untidy hånd, and is written with a thick-
nibbed pen in a pale grey ink. A chronological table of paschal let-
ters has been added on f 15v, the last side of the Ms., and this
begins with the year 1644, so that we should probably regard it
as having been written about that year; the hånd resembles that
in which the death of Bishop borlåkur is recorded, so that it might
also be the work of Hrolfur, with whose authorship the date is
consistent, (he was born in 1612).
I shall now give a list of the historical entries made in the main
hånd of the Ms., excluding the early Christian ones, about which
different annals show so much confusion that no useful results can
be obtained from them with regard to this Ms9. The remainder are
as follows:
f4r — January 3rd: Doctor petwr palladiws deyde: 1560*
January 16th: Hier porre sijdast: andlottz dagur herra
olafs hiallta sonar, 1569
9 Most of the annals I have consulted are collected in “Islandske Annaler indtil
1578”, ed. G. Storm, Christiania, 1888. This will be referred to as Is.Ann.
