The entries which I have marked with an asterisk are printed on
p. 188 of “Islenzkar Årti&askrår”, Vol. a10, but the treatment of the
Ms. there is not satisfactory, partly because it is incomplete,
partly because it has not been realised tbat there are more than
two bands, despite the faet that examples of all four are printed,
and the Ms. is consequently dated to the 17th century, which is,
of course, impossible.
Let us now examine these dates, taking the non-16th century
ones first. The three early batties noted liere—HelgastaSir, Orlygs-
staQir and kveråreyrar—are not given years, but we know from the
early annals and from Sturlunga saga that they occurred respectively
in 1220, 1238 and 1255. By comfcining this knowledge with the
indirect information about religious feast-days and days of the
week given in Sturlunga saga, the latest edition of that saga* 11 has
10 “Islenzkar Årti3askrår, e8a Obituaria Islandica”, ed. Jon t>orkelsson, Copen-
hagen, 1893-6, hereafter referred to as Ob.Is., with volume letter (a or b) and
page ref.
11 “Sturlunga saga”, ed. Jon Johannesaon, Magnus Finnbogason and Kriatjån
Eldjam, Reykjavik, 1946 (2 Vols.) The relevant refs. are respectively Vol. 1, pp. 275,
430 and (with fragmentarily preserved material) 617, and Vol. 2, p. 187.
