Abtract
This is the fourth and final article in a series of articles that deals with
the attempts to establish an independent church in Iceland in the early
20th century. A church that would be governed by a church council but
operated in constitutional relations with the state. The study covers mainly
the period 1904-1916.
During this period the debate about the relationship between church
and state and the churches autonomy took place. The official policy of the
National Church was always the one described above. Some theologians
wanted to go further and work towards separation of church and state. In
this relation bishop Þórhallur Bjarnarson (1908-1916) should be mentioned.
The discussions outlined here are from the period 1911-1916, after which
the matter was not much discussed the next 25 years. The main focus is on
the debate with took place on general synods.
The final part of the article there is an attempt to compare some elements
in the debate at the beginning of 20th century and the debate today.
