SUMMARY
This paper describes a study comparing speech perception in normal and spelling-
retarded students (average age 17 years). Though Icelandic spelling is usually consid-
ered reasonably regular, it has proven quite difficult to master for a number of Icelandic
students. The reasons for this have not been extensively investigated. It is clear that
Icelandic spelling makes demands on a number of diverse cognitive skills, some as-
pects of it are rule-govemed, others depend on rote memory, and no doubt other skills
as well are involved. It has been hypothesized by Baldur Sigurðsson and Steingrímur
Þórðarson (1987) that some errors are best explained as deficiences in speech percep-
