Deaths from tuberculosis may be classified as follows (last year’s
figures in round brackets): Pulinonary tuberculosis 72 (58), universal
tuberculosis 4 (7), tuberculosis of lymphatic glands 6 (0), tuberculosis
of bones and joints 0 (7), meningeal tuberculosis 9 (14), abdominal
tuberculosis 0 (4), tuberculosis of tlie urinary and generative organs
7 (4).
7. Leprosy. The number of patients has been almost constantly de-
creasing in previous years, the additional case this year being an old
one, that should have been reported years ago.

These figures are based upon monthly reports from physicians, but
in the annual report on hydatid disease, which comprises all medical
districts in this country except four, 25 cases are notified.

In addition to thc monthly reports from district medical officers,
on which the ahove survey is based, medical officers in all districts
except four, have made out a list showing the incidence of malignant
tumors during the jrear. According to these tables there are 232 cancer
patients, hesides 1!) suffering from sarcoma and other malignant
growths and 5 from tumors of the brain. On page 52 tliese malignant
tumors are classified according to location.
10. School-lnspection. In Iceland an ohligatory medieal examina-
tion of all school-children takes place at the beginning of each session,
especially with regard to tuberculosis. At the same time the sanitary
condition of Ihe schools is inspected and all matters hearing upon
the health of the children are looked into. The inspection is under-
taken by the district medical officers. In lteykjavík, however, there are
special school medical officers. Table X shows the resutt of school
inspection in the whole country with the exception of one district
comprising 13462 children.
11. Maternity (see tahles XII—XIV). The total numher of hirtlis
in 1940 was 2480 born alive and 51 stillborn, or 20,2%o of the total
number.
