að tilraunir þær til landnáms, sem hér hafa verið ræddar, séu einn
þáttur þeirrar útfærslu. Ekki er útilokað að vepjur hafi orpið hér
oftar en hér er getið, þótt um það skorti heimildir. Einnig má búast
við, að þær reyni hér aftur fyrir sér um varp. Er því mikilvægt að
menn sem kynnu að verða slíks varir, geri Náttúrufræðistofnun
íslands aðvart.

SUMMARY
Lapwings nesting in Iceland

On 12 June 1963, the author and Mr. Ragriar Sigfinnsson were driving past
the farm of Árdalur in Kelduhverfi, N. E. Iceland, when a lapwing was seen
mobbing a gyrfalcon which was sitting on a fence post. Our suspicion was
innnediately aroused and a subsequent investigation led to the discovery ot a
lapwing nest containing four eggs in an advanced stage of incuhation. One of the
lapwings had been incubating wliile tlie other was mobbing the gyrfalcon.
Mr. Johannes Thörarinsson, farmer at Árdalur, visited the nest a few days
later, at which time it contained four young. On 13 July 1 spoke to Thorarins-
son, who tlien told me that lie had seen one of the lapwings in a hayfield a few
days before. On 15 July 1 visited the nesting site together with Mr. Arnthþr
Gardarsson, Dr. Firinur Gudmundsson and Dr. David Jenkins. We found one
of the adult birds accompanied by onc large young but still not fledged. Finally,
