ANTHONV FAULKES
monstrated in the investigation of the manuscripts on the succeeding
pages:
A) In the original glossary of Magnús Ólafsson:
Grettis Saga is the most used source, and ab. 280 quotations are
taken from it. The MS used is now lost, but it was closely related to
NkS 1714 4to and Kall. 611 4to (E-type text).
Orkneyinga Saga: 118 quotations, taken from the now fragmentary
AM 325 III a 4to.
Egils Saga provides over 100 quotations. The MS used was derived
from Möðruvallabók, and was closely relaled to JS 28 fol., AM 145
fol., and AM 568 4to.
Óláfs Saga Helga: 64 quotations, taken from Sthm perg. 4to no. 4.
Óláfs Saga Tryggvasonar: 39 quotations from a MS derived írom
AM 61 fol.
A composite manuscript closely related to AM 568 4to was used
for the quotíitions from Kjalnesinga Saga (16 quotations), Banda-
manna Saga (23, the Möðruvallabók version), Króka-Refs Saga (3;
a fourth was added in Copenhagen from a different source, see be-
low), Orrns Þátlr Stórólfssonar (19), Hávarðar Saga (2), and pro-
bably also for the two quotations from Víglundar Saga.
Knytlinga Saga: 4 quotations from a MS similar to AM 180 b fol.
Völsunga Saga and Ragnars Saga Loðbrókar: one quotation from
each, probably using NkS 1824 b 4to.
Njáls Saga (4) and Laxdœla Saga (4). The quotations from these
sagas were probably made from memory, but Magnús had probably
read them in Möðruvallabók.
Fóstbrœðra Saga and Eyrbyggja Saga. Magnús has one quotation
from each of these sagas, and he probably made them from memory.
The MSS he used are not known.
Snorra Edda. 5 of the quotations are from Laufás Edda, and two
probably from Codex Wormianus.
Grágás, Jónsbók and Gulaþingslög were used for 8 quotations.
The MSS used are unknown.
