ANTHONY FAULKES
Saga, which is therefore older. This quotation implies that this passage was
included in Magnús Ólafsson’s MS of Orkneyinga Saga, and was therefore
not a later addition to the text.05 Perhaps, tlien, the passage ought to be in-
cluded in the reconstructed text of Orkneyinga Saga. On the other hand, the
reference in DG 55 to “JJ sogum” may imply that Magnús used more than
one saga concemed with the Orkney Jarls, including Magnúss Saga If. But
he does not quote from this saga elsewhere.
In some cases the quotations from this saga in DG 55 have dif-
ferent readings from SLR, and sometimes these are closer to the MSS,
showing that the deviations in SLR are due to errors in printing:
5 Alóg: ... er honum þotti verster ... — DG 55 has mest for verster, agreeing
with the MS of the saga.
37 Gaddan: ... Hier kiemur ad þui, sem mællt er, atfar sier allt sent er ... —
DG 55 has “... ad faar er so vitur at allt siær sem er.”
94 Odur: Þad var einn tdag at einn] odur madur ... — SLR omits the brac-
keted words, which are in DG 55. 702 has: “Þat var einn dag óðr maðr.”
Four of the quotations do not appear in DG 55, but these are ac-
cidental omissions, as there is no evidence that they are taken from
a different source from the other quotations (see above p. 36):
*90 Ndr: Gerla sa ... ná saarum.
*113 Ad Semia nuil: Sömdu þau ... giptast honum.
•124 Sundur giorder: Kale var Skartz ... af Englande.
•128 Traust: Jarl spurde ad Bruse ... sækia hans traust.
ÓlÁfs Saga Helga. The quotations from this saga were examined
by Jón Helgason. He found that the manuscript used was St. Perg.
4to no. 4.06
I have found four more quotations from this saga, besides those
mentioned by him. These are:
26 Ad Drepa nidur: Drepid nidur herórinne (223:4-—5).
*98 Oheppiliga: Sa þa aller ad oheppiliga var umradid. — This is ascribed to
Grcltis Saga in SLR, but is clearly taken from Óláfs Saga Helga (596:5).
85 The fragment and Magnús’ transcripts do not cover tliis part of the saga.
