ANTHONY FAULKES
44 Grid: Hier set eg grid ... — Iíere is quoted the whole of the speech of Hafr
Þórarinsson, known as “Hafrsgrið”, a long legal formula which seems to have
had particular interest for 17th century readers, for there are several MSS
which contain it on its own.31 In SLR the quotation is accompanied by a
long summary of the context in Latin. The text of the quotation, as in most
17th century MSS, differs considerably from that of the vellum MSS, and
here again the closest texts are those of 1714 and 611. To show the great
changes that have come about in this passage in the copying of the saga, the
whole quotation is reproduced below, parallel with the text of the edition
(pp. 232—233) :32

31 In the first edition of the saga, in Nockrer Marg-Frooder Sögu-Pætter
(1756), which generally follows a MS which must have been very similar to R.
698 (Uppsala University Library), if indeed it was not this MS itself, this pas-
sage was printed, not from a manuscript, but from the quotation in SLR. The
whole entry is also reprinted after SLR in the introduction to Resen’s edition
of LI pp. 2—6.
32 Except where stated otherwise in the notes, 1714 and 611 agree in all
readings with SLR.
