M and 568, but this sentence only is omitted from both JS 28 and
AM 145, and so also presumably from the MS from which they were
both copied. The MS used for the Hrappsey edition also evidently
lacked the sentence, for the editor has replaced it with a passage
apparently of his own composition (p. 33):
... giæfe honum. Þorolfur svarar, fir vil eg falla med Dreingskap, enn
vera Koongsinns Underlæga alla mijna lijfdaga. Seig þw Koonge, seiger
Þorolfur: ad eg bidie hann ad lofa mier ad ganga wt, og veria mig med
vopnum, og vit hvprt eg hef ei mann firer mig. Aulver innte Koonge And-

Unless, therefore, Magnús used another MS for these quotations,
his copy cannot have been derived from the MS from which JS 28
and AM 145 were copied. The relationship was perhaps as follows:

If, however, Magnús went to M itself for some quotations, the exis-
tence of z need not be postulated.
It is possible that the MS used by Magnús was x, i. e. the MS copied
directly from M, but this is unlikely, for there are many readings in
SLR which are so different from the text of M and the paper MSS,
that it seems certain that there was at least one intervening copy bet-
ween x and SLR. For instance, in the passages corresponding to the
quotations under Mannspiell (p. 82), Nidgiolld (p. 92), and Um-
gierd (p. 141), M and the paper MSS all have, instead of these words,
mannfall, manngjöld, and slíðrinn respectively. It is highly unlikely
that Magnús would have misquoted the head-words, and so these
words must have been in the MS he used. But they cannot have been
