THE SOURCES OF SPECIMEN LEXICI RUNICI
mentio in exprobatione magna-
tum i Bandamanna Saga.
Neither entry is accompanied
by a fuller quotation, and neither
word is found in the printed texts
of the saga. It is not, however,
impossible that they were present
in some paper MS of the saga,
but I have not found any which
contains them. Aplakaljur,
though well known in the later
language, is apparently not found
in mediæval Icelandic at all.
Andgeifla is mentioned in Árni
Magnússons Levned og Skrifter
II (1930), 252: “Andgeiflast, og-
ganire, obloqui, Vestfirdska.”
Since neither entry is found in
DG 55, it may be that they were
inserted into the glossary in Den-
mark, possibly by Guðmundur
Andrésson, who includes the word
aplakálfur in his own dictionary
(p. 13), although without a re-
ference.
Cf. below p. 98, concerning the
entry Apalldur.
Króka-Refs Saga:

arme Refur sem Grænlendigum
hefur giort mikid Illdbyte (156).
130 Varnadur: Hefur þu þan varnad
flutt ... saker fiandmanna vora
(156).
128 Tötrar: Sigstyggur kastadi þa
tótrum sem hann duldist i (159).
— The last four words do not
appear in the MSS and are doubt-
85
less a gloss added by the compiler
to explain the context.
There is a fourth quotation from
this saga in SLR, s. v. Vijglysing, con-
taining the riddles and their explana-
tions from chs. 16 and 17, but this en-
try was added to DG 55 in an appen-
dix, and was evidently not a part of
the original glossary. The source of
this entry is discussed on pp. 48—50.
