ANTHONY FAULKES
17 Bilbugur. Grettla 154.
18 Bloot. Orkneyinga saga 1.
18 at Blóskra. Grettla 71.
20 Bragd. The second quotation is
from Orkneyinga saga 221.
20 ad Braka. Grettla 75.
21 Brautar geinge: Isfird S: — This
quotation is not from Ilávarðar
Saga, but from Laxdæla 21. See
above p. 99.
22 Bryn. Grettla 94.
22 Bijfur. Kjalnesinga Saga (ÍF XIV
17).
23 Byrdingur. Under this word there
is a quotation from Grettla 73 in
DG 55, but it was omitted from
SLR. See above p. 66.
*23 Byckabrogd. The source of this
entry is still obscure. See pp. 48
and 124.
DG 55 ad Briöta upp Vopn. Orkney-
inga saga 46. See above p. 93.
23 Dœla: (Antlia). — Grettla 55.
25 Dasadur: Gretl: Vrdu þamen
Dasader. — This sentence does
not appear in the printed texts of
Grettis Saga. But cf. Vápnfirð-
inga Saga (ÍF XI 34) and Þor-
steins Saga Víkingssonar (Fas II
456:6). — Same entry: Opt var eg
dassadur eg dro þæssa. — This is
stated to have been found inscri-
bed in runes on an oar washed
ashore on the north coast of Ice-
land in Magnús Ólafsson’s
youth.71a
26 Dölgur. Orkneyinga saga 184.
26 Draap. The second quotation is
from Orkneyinga saga 104, and
the third from Grettla 83.
*27 Drynur: Noregs Chronica: Þad
var drunur þeirra Haralds manna.
— This is not in DG 55 and was
probably added (from memory)
in Denmark. There is known to
have been manuscripts there at
this time of Óláfs Saga Helga,
Heimskringla, and Fagrskinna,
any of which might conceivably
be described as “Noregs Chro-
nica”, but the quotation does not
seem to be in any of these books.
27 Dularkujl. Grettla 209.
27 Dynur. Ibid. 96.
29 Einhlytur. Ibid. 98.
29 Einsœt.. Ibid. 94.
*30 Eptermœle. Ibid. 80.
30 Ey: Einarus Sculason. — The
poem quoted here is found in
Laufás Edda under “Eyja Heiti”.
See SnE II 491—492, and p. 102
above.
34 Faalatur: Þorgier gaf sier faat
um hann. — There is no reference
accompanying this quotation, but
it is perhaps from Grettla; cf. p.
94: “Þorgils ... gaf sér fátt at
því” (under ad Leggia langt upp,
71a SLR has the note: “In remo qvodam ad littus Boreale Islandiæ delato hæc
insculpta extabant literis Runicis.” But in DG 55 the note is fuller, and is pro-
bably nearer to what Magnús originally wrote: “In mea pueritia pars ingentis
remi ad littus islandicum Boreale é mari projecta ferebatur, cui literis Runicis
hæc incisa verba legi poterint.”
