SUMMARY Remarks on the house ruins at Lundur. This paper deals with the interpretation of a group of house ruins at Lundur, Borgarfjarðarsýsla, in Southwest-Iceland. In 1884 Sigurður Vigfússon had already carried out a hasty excavation of the site. He was convinced that he had before him the remnants of a hof, a temple from the pagan period, a supposition based on a vague local tradition. The ruins were re-excavated by J. Voionmaa in 1939. This time the excavation was very efficiently carried out and the ground plan of the houses came to light in great detail. Two oblong houses are placed end to end as shown on Voionmaa’s plan on p. 105. They were thought to be „farm-houses proper”, the actual living-quarters of a farmer and his household. The present author, however, maintains that these ruins represent a cowshed (a byre) and a barn respectively, dating probably from the Middle Ages. For comparison a striking case is shown on p. 108, the ground plan of a byre and barn at Gröf in öræfi, Southeast-Iceland, a farm devastated in 1362. So striking is the similarity in fact that there cannot be any doubt as to the correctness of this identification of the Lundur houses. The author points out in addition that the situation of the houses on the edge of a steep hill makes it almost impossible to identify them as actual farm-houses, whereas outhouses might very normally be situated that way.
