hlaðnir upp og jafnframt gert við grindina þar fyrir.

Old bell toiver at Möðruvellir, Northern Iceland.
The present article deals with one of two wooden bell towers still existing from
former times in Iceland. Moreover the tower is probably the oldest existing wooden
structure built in the traditional Icelandic fashion. It was erected in 1781. The fact
that it is still preserved may at least partly be due to the comparatively dry climate
in the Eyjafjörður district in the North of Iceland, in which the tower stands. Its
construction shows a number of features characteristic for old Ieelandic house
building. A few details may be mentioned: 1. Ends of beams protruding from the
corner pillars. 2. Joint of beam and corner pillar in northeast corner. 3. Slanting
front pillars. All these features are still to be seen in old wooden houses in Norway,
cf. figs.
