THE SOURCES OF SPECIMEN LEXICI RUNICI 55 The Bible is used for 2 quotations. The version used was the Guð- brandsbiblía (1584). One of the quotations, lacking in DG 55, might have been added to the glossary in Copenhagen. De Conjlictu Vitiorum et Virtutum, a treatise by Bishop Isidore of Seville: 6 quotations are taken from an Icelandic translation of this work, which only survives in a fragmentary form in AM 655 XXVI 4to. Probably another MS was used. Magnús includes two quotations from Rímur, one from Rollants Rímur (by Þórður Magnússon of Strjúgur), and one from Óláfs Rím- ur Tryggvasonar (Svölðar Rímur). The poem Trollaslagur, although not included in the original glossary, probably also derives from material collected by Magnús Ólafsson. B) The following were probably used in the revision of the glos- sary: Poelic Edda: 11 quotations, probably from a copy of the Codex Regius. Tliey are all from Völuspá and Ilávamál. Snorra Edda: Anolher 6 quotations from a MS of Laufás Edda were added in revision, and also one quotation from Gróttasöngr. Hróljs Saga Kraka: 2 quotations, probably from memory. Five more quotations from Njáls Saga, and one from Fóstbrœðra Saga appear to have been added, again almost certainly from me- mory. A reference to Ragnars Saga, and one to “Heidecks Kongs Þatt” were also probably added. Two references to Bandamanna Saga quoting only single words, and a reference to “Noregs Chro- nica” I have been unable to indentify. Various Lawbooks provided another 9 quotations. One misquotation is made from Tristrams Kvœði. Brynjólfur Sveinsson’s Conjectanea were used for 6 entries. The material taken from this book includes quotations from Sturlaugs Saga Starfsama, Orvar-Odds Saga, Laujás Edda, Grímnismál, and Krákumál. The entries under Vijglysing (pp. 134—139, including the riddles from Króka-Refs Saga) and Muta (p. 88, including the poem Trolla-
