The sub-group to which the quotations in SLR show greatest re-
semblance is group m, which consists of AM 163 a and b fol., and
AM 477 4to. But there are two other MSS vvhich Boer does not assign
to any sub-group, saying merely that they show very corrupt versions
of the text, which are much closer to the one used by Magnús. These
are NkS 1714 4to, and Kall. 611 4to, both preserved in the Royal
Library in Copenhagen, and both written in the early 18th century.
These two MSS have a text which is closer to the readings found in
SLR than that of any other surviving MS of the saga.29
The following selection of the quotations in SLR demonstrates the
similarity between the MS from which they were taken and NkS 1714
and Kall. 611.30
15 Bernshupór: Morg Beniskupór giordi hann þau sem ej eru j Sogu sætt (42).
-— 1714 and 611 have bernskupör, but most other MSS have bernskubrögð.
80 Mulur: Þad var sidur og hattur ... (45). — 611 has siðr ok háttr hut all
other MSS have either þat var siðr or þat var háttr.
107 Rekstrar: Skipid var helldur tekt IsicJ og þoldi illa rekstra (51). — The
vellum MSS have réttinn, some paper MSS have storminn, but only 1714 has
rekstra.
60 Kaskur: Þeir reru kasklega (63). — The vellum MSS have knáliga, 611 has
roskliga, but 1714 (and some other paper MSS) has kaskliga.
99 Ordfœr: Orda sinna cr liuor radande (64). — So 611 and the m-MSS, hut
the vellums and most of the other MSS have “Orða sinna á hverr ráð.”
51 Hareiste: Vard af þessu mikid gamau og hareiste (65). — 611, 1714, and AM
939 4to (a k-type MS) have the same as SLR, but m has “mikill glaumr öllu
saman ok háreysti,” and the vellum MSS have “varð af þessu öllu saman há-
reysti til þeirra at heyra.”
2!) To a certain extent, it is useless to try to fit the texl used in SLR into any
of the sub-groups, as the MS used by Magnús must liave been older than any of
the surviving MSS, and was probably written before these sub-groups had de-
veloped from the original MSS. Thus sometimes the readings found in SLR
correspond to one sub-group, and sometimes to another, and sometimes preserve
forms more original than any of the paper MSS. The MS used must have been
closely related to the original of the k- and m-groups.
