96 ANTHONY FAULKES taining Völsunga Saga and Ragnars Saga, it is probable that he no longer had it by him when he was making the glossary, for the re- ference to Ragnars Saga seems to have been made from memory: 18 Blodugla: idem notat [i. e. as BlóSörn] in Regnars Sag: ubi filii Regneri Lodbrog Regem Ellam in Anglia pari modo neci dederunt ob tyrannidem in patrem. — This description of the context, while a fuller quotation is lacking, implies that the reference was made from memory. The word Blóðugla does not appear in any of the known MSS of the saga, and does not seem to be re- corded at all in Old Icelandic. Even the synonym blóðörn does not appear in the saga.BD Besides this reference, there is the following sentence of which the source is not mentioned in SLR: *27 Dyblitza: Ragnar Lodbrok var kastadur i orma dyblitzlu. — This also does not appear in the known MSS of Ragnars Saga, but something similar is found in the Þáttr of the sons of Ragnar (ch. 3): “... varð hann ... settr i einn ormgarð.” This entry, which is not in DG 55, was perhaps added to the glos- sary in Copenhagen. Njáls Saga. Of the nine quotations from Njála, only four are in DG 55, and it is probably only these that belonged to the original glossary of Magnús Ólafsson. Of those not in DG 55, three show correspondence to a certain extent with entries in LI, and although it is not impossible for them to have been taken by Guðmundur from SLR, the likelihood is that they were inserted by him into SLR, and subsequently used again in his own dictionary (see above pp. 38— 43). The inaccuracy of these quotations suggests that Guðmundur CD BlóOugla is recorded in LI p. 33, and in Bjöm Ilalldórsson. In hotli cases, SLR may have been the source. Blóðrefill, which is given as another synonym of blóðörn, as a result of a corrupt reading in one of the MSS of Orms Þáttr (see above p. 82), is also given in this sense in Björn Halldórsson. Bláðugla, however, undoubtedly existed in Old Icelandic, cf. Sigurðar saga þögla (1883), 27:29: “Þá lét hún taka sverð ok lét rista uglu á baki þeim með sverðs-odd- unum.
