made them from memory. LI also contains several other quotations
from Njála, and these seem to be from GkS 2870 4to, or a MS with
a similar text (e. g. LI p. 26 s. v. Ben, p. 45 s. v. Dögl). Worm ap-
parently possessed or used a MS of Njála at some time, for it is men-
tioned as a source in Monumenta Danica (1645).
The four quotations which are in DG 55 probably derive, like the
quotations from Laxdæla, from Möðruvallabók, although there is no
positive evidence for this, since they do not correspond exactly with
any of the vellum MSS:00
134 Vijg: Gunnar var allra manna best vijgur þeirra sem þa voru i Islande (52
—53). — The words “þeirra ... Islande” do not appear in any MS and are
doubtless an amplification made by Magnús himself. This part of the saga
is now lacking in Möðruvallabók, but GkS 2868 4to and GkS 2870 4to both
include the word allra which is lacking in some MSS.
101 Ovallde: Ovænt er ad siiua sok a övallda. — P. 221: “Þat er eigi gott ráð
... at snúa spkinni á óvalda.” No MS seems to have óvænt in this place.
64 Konbœner: Þad er erende mitt hyngad ... at ahtum hafa. — See pp. 240—
241. SLR omits five lines from this passage, from “Fyrir hvers hönd” to “Gott
má frá honum segja, segir Njáll, ok,” but otherwise the quotation agrees
exactly with Möðruvallabók, except that it has hyngad ad for hyngat er and
liaja for gera. The word en, omitted in SLR after Flose, is present in DG 55.
93 Odrennelegur: Var þeirra flockur oarennilegur (308). — There is no devia-
tion from Möðruvallabók.
The following are the quotations probably added by Guðmundur:
*10 Atburder: Þeir atburder vórdu i Norege: ad Ilakon Jarl var skorinn a Hals
af þræle synum. — This is clearly a paraphrase of the passage on p. 255:
“Urðu þau ævilok Ilákonar Jarls, at Karkr þræll skar hann á háls á Rimul í
Gaulardal.”
*39 Gandreid: Eg rijd Heste__fare kefli. Þetta sagdi Gialti Skeggia Son ad
væri Gandred, og mundi vera fyre storum tijdendum. — This is a fairly
close rendering of v. 12, p. 321, followed by a paraphrase of Iljalti’s speech
at the end of the chapter.
*14 Ben: Flose særde Helga holundar sare edur mergundar, þad er ad ben
giordist, og hann fieck bana af. — This formula occurs several times in Njála,
