It is probable, as suggested by Desmond Slay, that both these
quotations were inserted into the glossary by Guðmundur Andrésson,
who also quotes from Hrólfs Saga in LI.62
Snorra Edda. Only six of the 13 quotations from Snorra Edda in-
cluded in SLR are found in DG 55, and it is probable that the re-
mainder were added to the glossary in Copenhagen by Guðmundur
Andrésson (see above pp. 38—43), whose own dictionary contains
many quotations from the same source. Those which were in the
original glossary were probably mostly taken by Magnús Ólafsson
from his own Laufás Edda, which he compiled in 1608—09, using
chiefly Codex Wormianus, which he had borrowed from Arngrímur
Jónsson, but also some other MSS about which very little is known.
A manuscript made by Stephanius, which is now lost, but which was
derived from the Laufás Edda, Codex Upsaliensis, and Magnús’ Latin
translation of the former, later formed the basis of Resen’s edition
of the Edda which was published in 1665 (see above p. 33).
A fragment still survives of Magnús’ autograph copy of Laufás
Edda in AM 758 4to, containing only the part corresponding to
Gylfaginning, but the best complete MS is AM 743 4to, and the
quotations are here compared to the readings of this MS.
Two of the quotations do not occur in Laufás Edda, and were pro-
bably taken direct from Codex Wormianus, or from transcripts of
poems contained in this MS, made while it was in Magnús’ posses-
sion.
From Laufás Edda are:
72 Lendir menn: Edda i J: Einu Landi eru morg hieröd ... Kongar edur Jarl-
ar (SnE I 456). — This passage corresponds closely with tlie readings of AM
743 4to, under “Uppruni nokkra Konga heita”.
76 Madur: Madur er huor fyrer sig, hid fyrsta og hid œdsta heite mans er
Keisare þar nœst Kongur þar næst Jarl (SnE I 512). — AM 743 has exactly
the same, except that it has þá nœst Jarl (under “Konga heiti”).
