Abstract
Feminist critique of the philosophical canon
and the culture of academic philosophy
The canon of western philosophy has been critically examined in the last decades,
not least in feminist philosophy. Feminist criticism of the canon of philosophy
focuses on two major aspects: On the absence and exclusion of women philo-
sophers from the philosophical canon, and on how philosophy’s conceptions of
the thinking and practicing human being have often been determined in accord
with a conception of man as male.This paper discusses attempts in contemporary
feminist philosophy to “re-read” the philosophical canon both historically and
conceptually. In the final part of the paper Sally Haslanger’s, Martha Nussbaum’s
and Michelle Le Doeuíf’s recent criticism of the culture of philosophy as an
academic discipline is discussed.
