to Sæmundr and to Snorri, because the first of these wrote “initia et
fundamentalia,” the latter “locupletatio et opusculi absolutio.... Non
aliter ac Chronicon Carionis etiam Melantoni imputatur.”11
Finally, though it is not directly relevant to the dissemination of
Carion in Iceland, Arni Magnusson’s bibliographical notes and ex-
cerpts in AM 231 8vo include three slips (nos. 390-392) on editions of
Chronica Carionis.
II. Oddverja-Annåll
According to Gustav Storm, the compiler of the Oddverja-Annåll in
AM 417 4to (late sixteenth century) had as one of his sources
1416.12
This judgement, offered without documentation, has not received the
close investigation which it deserves.13
Under “Ano 1396” in Oddverja-Annåll Storm prints:
skiedi f>ad mykla slag sem Tyrkier weittu kristnum monnum: suo af peim fiellu
920000 kristina manna:
This must refer to the battie of Nicopolis, where Christian forces
under Sigismund were defeated by Turks, but in Chronica Carionis
(where the battie is said to have taken place in 1395), no figure is given
for the number of slain Christians; see 1572, p. 626; 1573, pp. 1000-1;
1595, f. 180v.
Under “Ano 1397” O-A reports: “hof sa gudspiallige predikari Jo-
hannes Haus sig j liosi ad lata moti pauanum og hans fals lærdomi wm
aflåtz bref j landinu Beheimen.” John Huss’ preaching is mentioned in
