pottery in Greece. The excavator’s attempt at showing the depen-
dence of the Proto-Geometric ceramic on these wares from a much
earlier period, however, has not been accepted, but the Afidna
finds gave rise to a vivid and fruitful discussion of the relation
between the more distinguished art and popular art and of the
chronology of prehistoric periods in Greece.
The second period of excavations in Greece fell in the twenties
and thirties. It was through the excavations at Asine that a whole
group of young archaeologists came into contact with classical
soil and later in various places continued investigations.
Asine.8 — Asine is situated on a rocky spit of land in the sea
on the eastern part of the plain of Argolis. The place is men-
tioned both in the Iliad and in later literature. It was intended
in so many-sided a way as possible to investigate the history of
the settlement of the place. This was made through excavations
in a large number of places within the precincts of the city and
in the extensive necropolises. On the acropolis the scanty rem-
nants of the settlement were examined, which proved to belong
to prehistoric as well as later periods. The large fortification
walls were of great interest. They also surrounded the lower
8 The definitive publication on the excavations is O. Frödin and A. W.
Persson, ed. by A. Westholm: Asine, Results of the Swedish Excava-
tions 1922—30, Stockholm 1938. In this work Frödin dealt with the
settlement on the acropolis and the temple on Barbouna and also all
the tombs excavated, while Persson discussed all finds. Westholm
analyzed the architecture and the various strata of the settlement in
the lower town, and H. Arbman described the Roman thermae. This
final publication was preceded by several preliminary reports: Pers-
son, Asiné, recherches préliminaires en vue des fouilles suédoises, in
the Bull. de la Soc. des Lettres de Lund 1920—21 p. 17, Aperqu
provisoire des résultats obtenus au cours des fouilles d’Asiné faites en
1922, in the same Bulletin 1922—23, p. 25; Frödin and Persson, Rap-
port préliminaire sur les fouilles d’Asiné 1922—24, in the Bulletin
1924—25, p. 23. A popular work is Persson, Asine, Uppsala 1931.
The anthropological material was treated by C. M. Fiirst, Zur Anthro-
pologie der prdhistorischen Griechen in Argolis, Lund 1930, Uber
prahistorische Schadel aus Argolis, in the Verhandl. der Ges. f. Phys.
Anthropologie 1930. Frödin, Utstdllning av fynd och bilder fran Asine,
Stockholm 1925, is a guide to the Asine Exhibition in Stockholm
1925.
