stages of settlement from the Neolithic Age to the end of the
Bronze Age was completely excavated. At the various stages of
development we may follow the change of house types from
simple, primitive plans to plans of a more complex character.
This Bronze Age place was protected by a circular wall. The
excavator highly emphasizes the continuity of this development
and points out the close connexion of the place as also of the
whole province with the Adriatic territory in prehistoric times.
Among the finds especially the pottery predominates, which in
certain cases shows previously unknown forms. The excavations
on the Malthi acropolis are particularly important by here a place
in South-Western Greece having been examined which obviously
shows great differences from the previously known Eastern parts
of Greece with Argolis as principal centre.
Hagios Floros.18 Near this place Valmin excavated a small Doric
temple dedicated to the river-god Pamisos. Interesting findings
of pottery and small sculptures were made.
Koroni.10 Here some exceedingly fine mosaic floors from Roman
times were found.
Asea.~° E. Holmberg is the first scholar to find important rem-
nants of Neolithic culture in the southern part of the Pelopon-
nese, and he has also through detailed comparative studies been
able to place these finds in a wider connexion. The strata of
findings on the acropolis at Asea, excavated by Holmberg S. W.
of Tripolis in Arcadia, cover the time from the Late Neolithic
Period to the middle of the Middle Helladic Period. The place
later was inhabited for a shorter period in Hellenistic times. Con-
ditions at Asea show that the somewhat earlier Stone Age culture
in Thessaly extended also to Southern Greece. In the north, this
culture is followed by a somewhat later culture which may be
referred to the eastern parts of Greece. As appears from con-
ditions at Asea and some other places the early stage has con-
tinued in the south, uninfluenced by the fresh impulses in the
