of the Oriental Hilani type, which had been rebuilt in several
stages, could be dated at archaic times about 550 B. C. Already
the fact that this typically Oriental form is found so far west
is of the greatest interest. Another palace of the Greek megaron
type was investigated in the neighbourhood. To some degree it
supplants the earlier Hilani palace. The megaron opens out to-
wards a square courtyard. Connected with these buildings there
are a number of columnated halls and palatial buildings chiefly
originating from the jth century B.C. A large palace with a
square courtyard as centre originates from the 4th century B. C.
Among the finds from Larisa there are interesting pottery and
a large number of terra-cotta sculptures, above all a series of
terra-cotta plates with painted reliefs, which have decorated the
palaces and temples. They are of the highest quality and great
importance must be attached to them at the valuation of Ionic-
archaic sculptural art. — At Larisa also a number of peculiar
tumulus tombs were examined which apparently may throw a
light on connexions between Asia Minor and the Etruscan area
in Italy.
Mylassa.59 The results of A. W. Persson’s excavations at Mylassa,
started in 1938, have not yet been published, hence a detailed
description of them is not yet possible. Still, it may be stated that
at the part of the area where the work was started, the excavators
did not succeed in reaching down to the layers which might be
expected to be of special interest, but it is to be hoped that if
these excavations may be completed, important results may be
obtained, also as regards the prehistoric periods.
Kadi Köi.K0 A large prehistoric material of finds from Kadi Köi,
an open habitation-site south of Istanbul was examined by T. J.
Arne during one of his research journeys in Asia Minor. Indeed,
no greater excavations were ever started, but still the material
gives some idea of an interesting stage of culture at the transition
between the Stone Age and the Copper Age. A characteristic
feature is a dark pottery with points of connexion with the Bal-
kans, further some objects of terra-cotta and a large number of
