fen und um den Heringsschwarm im Ring herumgezogen; zu-
letzt, wenn der Schwarm vollstándig eingeschlossen ist, wird die
Wate unten mit einem Tau zusammengeschniirt, das in eisernen
Ringen an der unteren Kante der Wate entlang láuft. Dieser Rie-
sensack umschliesst jetzt den Heringszug gánzlich und kann im
giinstigsten Falle gegen 1000 Tonnen Heringe enthalten. Danach
kommt das Mutterschiff und schöpft den Reichtum in den Last-
raum oder aufs Deck. Sobald man volle Ladung hat, wird der
Kurs auf Land genommen, wo fleissige Hánde sich unverziiglich
daran machen, den Fang zu verarbeiten.
Im Winter bleibt der Hering auf hoher See, náhert sich aber
gegen Friihjahr der Siidkiiste Islands, um im April—Mai zu lai-
chen. Sobald die Laichzeit voriiber ist, bewegt er sich in riesigen
Massen nach Norden. In der Nacht zerstreuen die Schwárme
sich; dasselbe ist der Fall, wenn der Hering scheu wird. Tags aber
sammeln sie sich in dichten Ziigen, besonders bei warmem und
schönem Wetter. Im Juni—Juli befindet der Hering sich an der
Nord- und Nordwestkiiste, bewegt sich aber allmáhlich mit dem
Golfstrom langsam weiter ostwárts, ganz wie die Brut, die den-
selben Weg treibt. Temperatur und Ernáhrungsbedingungen spie-
len eine wichtige Rolle; wie nahe er an die Kiiste herankommt,
hángt in erster Linie von diesen Faktoren ab. Die Witterungs-
verháltnisse sind fiir die Fischerei von entscheidender Bedeutung,
da die Sackwate nur bei einigermassen ruhigem Wetter ange-
wandt werden kann. Am ganzen Nordlande entlang und in wei-
ter Entfernung von der Kiiste fischt man Heringe vom Juni bis
zum September. Ausserhalb der Territorialgrenze fischen Nor-
weger, Schweden und Finnen, ganze Flotten* von Fischern lie-
fern ihren Fang an Mutterschiffe, die den Hering einsalzen oder
in Heringsöl oder Heringsmehl verwandeln. Diese schwimmen-
den Stationen sind oft scharfe Konkurrenten der islándischen
Fischer.
Die islándische Teilnahme an der Heringsfischerei ist von Jahr
zu Jahr stándig gewachsen, und der Ertrag derselben bildet einen
immer grösseren Anteil an der Ausfuhr. In der Mitternachtssonne
der Juni- und Juli-Náchte herrscht oben im hohen Norden um
den Polarkreis ein reges Leben zu Wasser wie zu Lande. Hun-
derte von Schiffen, deren Lastráume mit Heringen angefiillt sind,
eilen den Háfen zu. Oft sind sie so schwer geladen, dass man sich
dariiber wundert, dass sie sich iiber Wasser halten können. Andere
hunderte nehmen den Kurs von der Kiiste nach den Fangplátzen,
