have been added by a reviser in Copenhagen after DG 55 was writ-
ten.7 There are upwards of 1000 entries in the printed dictionary,
and these contain about 800 quotations from Old Icelandic MSS
illustrating the usages of the words. In DG 55,120 of the quotations,
and 45 of the entries which do not contain quotations, are lacking.
As was pointed out above, no conclusions can be drawn from the
omission of entries under F and M. Further, the entries containing
quotations from Grettis Saga, Egils Saga, Óláfs Saga Helga, Óláfs
Saga Tryggvasonar, Orkneyinga Saga, Bandamanna Saga, Kjalnes-
inga Saga, and Knytlinga Saga which are lacking in DG 55 are evi-
dently accidental omissions also, for, as will be shown in the exa-
mination of the sources below, all the quotations from these sagas
are taken from the same MSS.8
The Additions to the Original Glossary. Apart from the en-
tries omitted from DG 55 which were in the original glossary, it is
probable that most of the material in SLR which is lacking in DG 55
was added to the glossary in Copenhagen, either by Worm himself,
or by some other person to whom he entrusted the task of revision.
Worm had the glossary in his possession for some twelve years be-
fore it was published, and it is conceivable that he asked several
people whom he knew, and who had some knowledge of Icelandic, to

Stirma, where DG 55 omits the quotalion, but includes a translation of it in
Danish; p. 98 s. v. Oheill, where the quotation is in DG 55 wrongly inserted
under the following word Öheppiliga, while the appropriate quotation illn-
strating the latter word is omitted. Further, many of the quotations which are
lacking in DG 55 are either the second or third quotation illustrating a single
word. This implies that the copyist thought that so many quotations under one
word were unnecessary, and accordingly purposely omitted some of them, e. g.
p. 115 s. v. Siodur, p. 105 s. v. Rammur, p. 128 s. v. Traust, and in many other
places.
