1 So 1714, the only MS which has
this reading (kennimenn). m and 611:
hristna menn.
Nearly all of the deviations of the readings in SLR from the accep-
ted text of Grettis Saga are found in either 1714 or 611, or else in one
or other of the MSS of the m- and k-groups. There are a few quota-
tions, however, which have readings which have no parallel in any of
the surviving MSS, and a few specimens of the more important of
these are given below:
121 Starj: Leis þu þennan staría vel af hende (37). — All MSS have: “Leys þú
þetta vel af hendi.”
97 Oglyminn: Gretter var i upvexte ögliminn (42). — The MSS have: “því at
hann var óglíminn.”
126 Teingder: Þorkiell var Aastvinur Asmundur (44). — The MSS have alda-
vinr.
“57 Hugur: Huorsu seiger þeir hugur um Syne þyna huorjer Idiu menn þeir
mume verda (44). — The MSS have this in indirect speech.
64 Kompanar: Þeir eru vorer kompanar. — The only occurrence of this word
in the saga is on p. 63: “ok aðrir kompánar þeira.”
115 Siodur: Ecke man ek bera brodur minn i Siöd sagde lliarande (80). —
The MSS have this in indirect speech.
*81 Mannliefnd: Hann qvad koma skyllde fyrir vijg þetta sekt eda mannhcfud
enn ei febætur. — See p. 90: “... kvað hér eigi skyldu fébœtr fyrir koma ...
annathvárt kœmi fyrir vígit sekð eða niannhefndir.”
122 Stirknadur: Villde hann prova huor þeirra hafde meira stirknat tekid sydan
þeir skildu ad. — P. 95: “... meira hefði við gengizk síðan.” Some MSS
have hejSi meira styrknaS but none liavc tekit.
90 Náttar þel: Hann kom til Gilsbacka a náttar þele. — P. 151: “Grettir kom
á Gilsbakka um daginn.” Some MSS (e. g. AM 151 fol.) have um kvelldit but
none have náttarþeli. The word however occurs on the next page of the edi-
tion: “Reið Grettir ... til Bjargs ok kom þar á náttarþeli.”
107 Reckia: Voru menn þa gengner til rekna. — The nearest to this in the saga
is on p. 152: “var fólk allt í svefni.”
