102 ANTHONY FAULKES 122 Steint: Litostratum variegatum ex lapidibus varii coloris. Hinc in Edda lapis qvilibet dicitur Skipa Söll, Navium Sol, qvod ejusmodi lapideo colore pictæ & illuminatæ essent. — Tliis kenning is listed in SnE I 420 and 424, where it is a kenning for shield, and it occurs among the kennings for shield in Laufás Edda also. The interpretation given here must have been made in a moment of absence of mind. 30—33 Ey: Blár er Balldrekur syrar, &c. — These four verses by Einarr Skúla- son are only found in their entirety in Laufás Edda and Resen’s Edda, and the readings of SLR agree almost exactly with AM 743 (see Skj. A I 484—485 and SnE II 491—492),02a where they appear under “Eyjar Heiti”. DG 55 Gyn: Týr liet framm sýna hægri hond og leggur i gýn ulfinum (SnE I 112). — AM 743 has: “Týr lét fram hægri hönd sína og leggr í munn úlfin- um,” and no MS seems to have the reading gin. — This entry is in DG 55, but was omitted from SLR. From Codex Wormianus are: 63 Kna: Arne Bp: Kna skalla ra falla. •— This is from a lausavísa by Árni Jóns- son, ábóti, whieh is printed in Skj. A II 430 and SnE II 500. The only MS in which it is found is Codex Wormianus. 69 Lii: La brytur Lóg skytur lingarmur Rangbarmur (Háttatal 78). — Hátta- tal is not included in Laufás Edda, and the quotation is probably made from Codex Wormianus, which differs only in having limgarmur. The remaining quotations were probably added by Guðmundur Andrésson, and probably also derive from Laufás Edda, of which two copies are known to have been at that time in Copenhagen and one of which may have been made available to Guðmundur, except the quotation from Gróttasöngr, which is not in the compilation. Guðmundur also quotes from this poem in his own dictionary. It is uncertain what MS he used. *4 Akarn: Þycke mier sem akarn nokud fielle i hofvid mier af trienu (SnE I 148). — The quotation is possibly made from memory. AM 743 has: “Féll akarn nokkut í höfuð mér?” Guðmundur includes the word Akarn in his own dictionary, p. 8, and adds “Vide in Edda”. 02í> SnE II 491—492 is taken from AM 748 4to: this MS contains the first two of the four verses quoted in SLR only. The other two are only found in Laufás- Edda and Resen’s Edda.
