“Halfr(eds) S(ag)”, “Vyga Gl. S”, “Gl(ums) S”, “Vatzdæla”, all refer to
parts of Óláfs Saga Tryggvasonar.
“Edda” refers indifferently to Snorra Edda and the Poetic Edda.
“Orms S(ogu)”, “de Ormero Storolfi filio” = Orrns Þáttr (Fms III 204—
228).
“Refus” = Króka-Refs Saga.
“Ban.m.S(ogu):” = Bandamanna Saga.
“Bua S(ogu)” = Kjalnesinga Saga.
“Isfird(inga) S.” = Hávarðar Saga ísfirðings.
“Kolbrunar S.” = Fóstbræðra Saga.
“Hist Sigurdi Jofnis Bana” (sic) = Völsunga Saga.
“Vet: Trans.”, “translatione veteri” = Guðbrandsbiblía (1584).
“Gragaas”, “Grafygle’ refer to Grágás; “Codex Legum”, “Codex”, “Logbok”
apparently all refer to Jónsbók; “Vet. Leg.” to Gulaþingslög.
“Antiquissimus (Vetustissimus) libellus de pugna (colloquio) vitiorum et
virtutum” refers to the translation of “De Conflictu Vitiorum et Virtutum” by
Bishop Isidore of Seville (see Leifar 180—182).
“Brynulphi Svenonii conjectaneorum in Saxonem periculo primo” and “Bryn-
olphus Svenonius” in the list of sources refer to the notes on Saxo Grammaticus
by Bishop Brynjólfur Sveinsson, preserved in AM 850 4to.
Besides these inconsistencies in the references, there are many
quotations where the references have been omitted altogether, and
also several occasions where quotations have been ascribed to the
wrong sources. For convenience, a Iist is here appended of the quota-
tions which have inadequate or wrong references, together with the
name of the source, if identified, and the page of the present work
on which the quotation is discussed. The list includes those quota-
tions of which I have been unable to find the source, but not the pro-
verbs found in the glossary, which are listed and discussed separate-
ly, nor the idiomatic expressions which appear to have no specific
source. The more important of these are also listed separately below:
