og var saumad saman skinned fyrer vtann, f>egar Harpagus hafde pessu til
leidar komedt. (f. 12r; cp. 1595, f. 30v)
The second detail could have been the invention of the translator, but
not the first. Neither of them is to be found in Odda-Annålar in 11153.
In the section on Xerxes there is one detail not in the Danish Carion
of 1595: to the list of miraculous signs that warned Xerxes of danger,
the Icelandic adds:
braudenu blædde pa bad var skored vmm bordunina. (f. 17v; cp. 1595, f.
37r)
The section on Artaxerxes Mnemon, the seventh Persian king, begins
with the following passage:
Vel Memor, fyrer fliotnæmis sakir var hann suo kalladur. hann atti 11 C syne
med 360 sijnum frillum enn iij ectaborna Darium Ariarathem og Ochum. (f.
20r; cp. 1595, f. 41r)
“Vmm nockra vijsinda menn sem woru j Grycklandi” (ff. 21v-22v)
ends with this passage which, like those under Xerxes and Artaxerxes
Mnemon, appears neither in 1595 nor in Odda-Annålar:
sumer seigia ad Aristotelis hafe stunged sier ofann j Euripum puj hann hafe
ecki skyniad huorninn hann yrde. og hafe sagt. qum Aristotelis non capiat
Euripum, capiat ergo Euripus Aristotelem. (f. 22v; cp. 1595, f. 46r)
The next place where the Icelandic Carion differs from its principal
source is in the section “Vmm pad mikla strijd sem var å millum
Pompeium Caium, og Julium keysara” (ff. 29r-31v). This deserves to
be printed in full, since it departs from 1595 more than any other
passage in the Icelandic Carion, and in an illustrative way. In the
transcription below, four distinctions are signalled: 1. material taken
from 1595 (principally from the section “Krig imellem Pompeio oc
Caio Iulio Cæsare, tuende Romerske Herrer,” ff. 68v-69v, but also
from ff. 70r-v and 72r-v) is in plain print; 2. passages which do not
come from 1595 and whose source (if any) is uncertain are spaced; 3.
passages with an unmistakable verbal resemblance to the beginning of
Oddverja-Annåll (pp. 429-33 as printed in Storm) are in italics\ 4.
passages which are both in Oddverja-Annåll and in Odda-Annålar in
