In addition to the verbal similarities connecting the two Icelandic
versions there is one substantial difference between them on the one
hånd and 1595 and other Continental versions on the other: in the
latter Guido’s wife gains her revenge not by serving Arnolphus the
poisoned drink herself but by bribing one of his captains to give his
master the poison. Add. 11153, in which the Captain still figures but
only as the agent through whom she gains access to the emperor,
represents a middle stage between the Danish version and that of
Sjåvarb., in which the captain does not appear at all.
Under the year 1002 the Sjåvarborgarannåll has this foreign mate-
rial:

Toward the end of this passage, in the right-hand margin, stands
“Cron Car. item(?) Joh: Schm:”. The information on Emperor Henry
corresponds closely to what is found in 1595, ff. 142v-143r:
HENRICVS, som oc kaldis Sanctus, den XIII. Tydske Keisere .... Hånd
regerede 21. Aar .... Henricus lod stiffte it Biscoppelig Sæde til Bambierg / oc
gaff en euig Rente der til .... [After being imprisoned, he] sprang offuer en

mand kallede hannem Henricum den Lamme [Claudus printed in margin] ...
