The version in 11153, f. 73r, however, has all the above and is even
closer in several respects:

The Sjåvarb. entry quoted above then turns to Otto III, whose reign
preceded that of Henry, and tells first of his faithless wife Maria in
roughly the same way as do 1595 (f. 142r) and 11153 (f. 72v). But
where those versions tell that she was burnt to death in France and
that her lover was executed, Sjåvarb. has her lover burnt, while she
lives to fix her attentions on another man; when this man refuses her
she accuses him (in the manner of Potiphar’s wife) and has him execu-
ted. The widow of this innocent man vindicates her husband and then
avenges him by sending Otto a pair of poisoned gloves. The poisoned
gloves appear in Carion, but in another context (though in close prox-
imity): they are sent by the widow of Crescentius, the Roman who
opposed Otto (1595, f. 142r; 11153, f. 72r). One might be tempted to
imagine that Porlåkur Markusson himself blended the two stories to-
gether, but in faet the source for all the material about Otto the Third
in Sjåvarb. is to be found in the Historische Chronica oder Kurze
Beschreibung der denckwiirdigsten Geschichten so sich von Anfang der
Welt biss auff die jetzige Zeit hin, by Gottfried Schultzen (or Schultze),
published in Liibeck by Heinrich Schwernwebel in 1647, where pp. 87-
88 have:
Des Otthonis Gemahlin die Maria fiihrte allezeit zu jhrer Vnzucht einen Jiing-
ling in Weiblicher Kleidung mit sich / derselbe ward verrathen / vnd verbrandt.
Hierauff lag sie wegen Vnzucht vnterschiedene mahlen einen frommen Edel-
man bitlich an / diesen / weil er jhr nicht zu willen seyn wolte / verklagte sie
bey dem Kayser / gleich hatte er die Vnzucht mit jhr getrieben / ward derowe-
gen auff des Otthonis Geheiss / vnschuldig hingerichtet. Dieses frommen
Edelmans Fraw / als welcher jhres Mannes Vnschuld allein bekandt war /
nahm jhres Mannes Haupt / kiistete es / vnd warff solches dem Otthoni zum
