42 ANTHONY FAULKES generally only found between entries in LI and entries in SLR which are not found in DG 55,13a implies that Guðmundur must have had some part in the revision of the glossary. He probably, therefore, inserted the references to Völuspá and Ilávamál (on which he was about this time engaged in writing a commentary), to Hrólfs Saga (which he also quotes in his own dictionary), and those references to Snorra Edda, Njáls Saga, Fóstbræðra Saga, and various lawbooks, which are not in DG 55. He quotes from all these sources in his own dictionary, most extensively from the Eddas and the lawbooks. He may also have added some of the proverbs, for he frequently cites proverbs in LI, and perhaps some other minor entries which do not contain quotations.14 13a In fact there are only three qnotations in DG 55 which are also in LI: one is the proverh Öl er annar maður (SLR p. 3, s. v. Afeingt aul, LI p. 9, s. v. 01ur: neither mentions the source). This proverh is common (see helow p. 123), and Guðmundur would almost certainly have known it from other sources hesides SLR. The second is from the poem Trollaslagur (SLR p. 88, s. v. Muta), of which Guðmundur quotes one line in LI (p. 245, s. v. Vaukvc): this could have heen takcn from either of the two versions in SLR, neither of which, however, seems to have been in Magnús Ólafsson’s original glossary, see helow p. 49. Guðmundur may anyway have known a version of the poem from oral tradition. The third is a quotation from Orkneyinga Saga (p. 81, s. v. Gat): “Gaddan / ... In Jarla Sögu af 0rknegu. Vide D. W.” “D. W.” probably means “Dr. Worm”, i. e. his dictionary, SLR, and refers to the entry on p. 37, s. v. Gaddan, which contains a quotation from Orkneyinga saga (1913—-16), 204—205. This is pro- hably the only case in whicli Guðmundur has used material from Magnús Ólafs- son’s original glossary in LI. — A fourth quotation, from Grettis Saga, verse 13, is found in LI p. 153, s. v. eg kroppna, and SLR p. 6, s. v. Kriplingar. Although this quotation is not in DG 55, the head-word is, and it may well have been in the original glossary and accidentally omitted from the transcript. But Guð- mundur is unlikely to have derived his quotation from tliat in SLR, for LI has thc reading kiklingum, while SLR has kriplingum. On the otlier hand, this quotation might well have been added to Magnús’ original glossary in Copen- hagen, for kriplingum is also the reading of DG 10, a MS of Grettis Saga which had belonged to Stephanius and may well have been in Copenhagen at this time. The source of the reading in LI is obscure. 14 Most of the correspondences between the two dictionaries are noted in the places where the relevant quotations from SI.R are discussed below.
