THE SOURCES OF SPECIMEN LEXICI RUNICI 105 From Hávamál: *12 Aulur: Aulur eg vard og ófur ólve (v. 14). — LI p. 9, s. v. 0lur: “01ur eg vard oc offvr plvi.” V. 15 in Resen’s version reads: “01ur er vard og offur 0lffe.” Cod. Reg.: “01r ek varff / varff ofrölvi.” *43 Glamme: Veit ogiorla sa vid verdi gislir, þo hann med glommum glamme (v. 31). — V. 26 in Resen’s text has: “veit ógi0rla sá vid verde gister / thó hann med gl0mmumm glamme.” Cod. Reg.: “veita görla sá er um verði gliss- ir þótt hann meff grömum glami.” *36 Fior: Aarla skal rysa sa annars vill fie med fiorve hafa (v. 58). — V. 50 in Resen’s text has: “Arla skal rysa sá ed annars vill / fie edur fi0r [v. 1. med fi0rve] haffa.” Cod. Reg.: “Ár skal rísa (sá) er annars vill fé effa fjör hafa.” *14 Bauta steinn: Betre er Sonur þott sie syd of alinn epter geinginn guma, sialldan Bauta steinar standa Brautu nær, nema reise nidur ad nid (v. 72). — The same passage is quoted in LI p. 25, s. v. Bautasteirn. In the correspon- ding verse in Resen’s Edda (v. 61) is the reading Bauta Steinar. Cod. Reg. has Bautarsteinar. LI has the same as SLR. *38 Gan: Þad hann þa reiner er ad Runum kiemur enum Reiginn kunnu, þeim ed giordu Gin reiginn (v. 80). — LI quotes this passage twice, p. 70, s .v. Fim- bul: “Runer þær Reigin kunnu göde Ginreigin / og fade fymbul þubur,” and p. 63, s. v. eg fiie: “Runer Reiginn kunna / þær ed fáde fymbul þulur.” These three versions of the same quotation demonstrate how inexact quotations in the dictionaries often are. Resen’s text (v. 70) has: “Thad thu [v. 1. haun thál reyner er ad Runum kemur ...” etc. Cod. Reg. has: “Þat er þá reynt er þú at rúnum spyrr ...” *22 Bu: Heima skal Hest fieta enn Hund a bue (v. 83). — So Resen (v. 74), but Cod. Reg. omits skal in this line. *59 Igiolld: 111 ydgiolld, liet eg hana haffa, liennar sára sæffa (v. 105). -— Cod. Reg. adds eptir after hana, but Resen (v. 94) omits it like SLR. *12 Auldur: Jord tekur vid óldre (v. 137). — LI has the same quotation p. 9, s. v. 0ldr. Lawbooks. Only Grágás is mentioned in the list of sources in SLR, hut several lawbooks seem to have been used by the compilers of the glossary. It is doubtful, however, whether many of the references can he regarded as quotations, in the sense of having been copied from manuscripts. Many of them contain only single words or very short phrases, and most of the longer quotations are so different from the known texts of the lawbooks that they must surely be paraphrases of passages remembered from the laws. Other references are almost
