72 There can be no doubt that Rugman used Notœ Uberiores as a source for
his collection of proverbs. Stephanius quotes 23 Icelandic proverbs (most of
which he took from the volume of Conjectanea which Brynjólfur Sveinsson sent
him in 1641; see above p. 44 with references), and 22 of these appear in Rug-
man’s collection in almost exactly the same form: even the variants mentioned
