THE SOURCES OF SPECIMEN LEXICI RUNICI 117 p. 71, SLR has the name Þorgeir in error for Þorgils) and p. 56: “Þorfinnr gaf sér ekki mikit at honum,” where some MSS have: “Þorfinnr gaf sér lítit um hann.” *35 Fadmbrogd. Grettla 43. 36 Fastmœle. Ibid. 66. *36 Fnikur. The source of this quota- tion is obscure. See above p. 40 and below p. 124. 37 Frdn\ Blindur med fránan Brand. — I have been unable to find the source of this quotation. *37 Fuke. See above p. 47. 40 Garpur. Grettla 101. 40 Garungur. The first quotation is from Grettla 57. The second, “Kongs menn giordu ad þessu mikid Gys”, is possibly from Áns Saga Bogsveigis (Fas II 337): “Gjörðu þeir [i. e. the king’s men] at þessu gys mikit.” Cf. also Króka-Refs Saga (ÍF XIV 124:11). DG 55 Gyn: Hakon Adalst. gein yíer hodduna. — ÓTM I 35. See above p. 88. The second quotation corre- sponds with SnE I 112. See above p. 102. All three quotations under this word are from Grettla, pp. 43, 65, and 84 resp. *59 Igiolld: ... in Saxone. Um Refs- bætur. — The source of this re- ference is obscure. See above p. 48. 62 Kinnbiarger. Grettla 135. 62 Klœkur. Both quotations under this word are from Knytlinga saga (1919—25), 134. See above p. 92. 62 Klamhogg: Hann slö hann klam- hogg um þiö þuer. — There is no reference accompanying this quo- tation either in SLR or DG 55, hut in Rugman’s collection of pro- verbs (no. 460) it is ascribed to “Knitlinga Saga”. Rugman’s source for this entry is probably Stephanius’ Notœ Uberiores, 146, where the same quotation is also ascribed to this saga.72 Step- hanius’ source must be Magnús 72 There can be no doubt that Rugman used Notœ Uberiores as a source for his collection of proverbs. Stephanius quotes 23 Icelandic proverbs (most of which he took from the volume of Conjectanea which Brynjólfur Sveinsson sent him in 1641; see above p. 44 with references), and 22 of these appear in Rug- man’s collection in almost exactly the same form: even the variants mentioned
