For the great English industry, the main technical points must be
recalled.Whether a reference to „cloths of Worthstead“ in 1301
means what were later called worsteds, that is, fabrics made of
combed wool, cannot be known; but the fifteenth- and early
sixteenth- century Norwich records show the two branches of
the industry quite distinct… .
The worsteds were never fulled or raised; they were dyed, cal-
endered, i.e. pressed between rollers, and then sheared – to clear
away loose fibres of wool, not to make a regular nap on the
cloth, as shearing (after fulling and raising) did, and does, with
true “woollens”.34
Í tilvitnuninni hér að ofan nefnir Clapham andstæðurnar „true wool-
lens“ og „worsteds“. Það eru annars vegar voðir, gerðar úr loðbandi og
síðan þæfðar, ýfðar og lóskornar, hins vegar voðir úr kambgarni sem
hvorki voru þæfðar né ýfðar og ekki lóskornar á sama hátt og klæði.
Jafnframt kemur fram að „worsteds“ voru eftirmeðhöndlaðar á sérstakan
hátt, pressaðar milli valsa og lóskornar til að hreinsa burt laus hár eða hár
sem ekki höfðu bundist vel í garn við spunann eða í vefnaðinum sjálfum.
Fram hefur komið að enska hugtakið woollen hefur sértæka merkingu í
sambandi við garngerð. Það virðist samkvæmt ofangreindri tilvitnun
einnig hafa sértæka merkingu í sambandi við voðir. Það tengist annars
vegar tiltekinni tækni í kembingu og spuna og hins vegar hugtakinu
cloth. Bæði hugtökin tengjast sem sagt loðbandsgerð og tiltekinni eftir-
meðhöndlun – þæfingu, ýfingu og lóskurði. Hugtakið woollens hefur
jafnframt víðtækari merkingu, tekur til ullarvöru almennt – hluta sem
gerðir eru úr ull – fatnaðar og hvers konar voða.35 Hugtakið cloth hefur
einnig almenna merkingu, vísar til textíla, ofinna eða gerðra með annarri
tækni, til ýmissa nota.36 Eftirfarandi skýrir frekar sértæka merkingu hug-
takanna woollen, worsted og cloth:
The woollen industry was divided into two main branches: the
clothing branch, or manufacture of short, carded wool; and the
worsted branch, or manufacture of long, combed wool. The
term „cloth“ was used where both warp and weft were spun
from carded wool; and the term „stuff ” (or tammy) denoted that
warp and weft were made from combed wool. A third category,
serge, was created by the mixture of carded and combed wool –
the weft being carded yarn, and the warp combed yarn. These
