English summary This is the second article in a series concerning the campaign for an independent state church in the early 20th century. The article discusses the ideas of Thorhallur Bjarnarson (1855-1916), who taught at the Icelandic Seminary and later became bishop, about the relationship between state and church. During Bjarnarson’s episcopate, he followed the State Church’s policy, which was that the church should have more independence and autonomy but that the relationship with the state should remain. His personal opinion was of a more radical nature and for his entire career he seems to have found it inevitable that the relationship between the two must come to an end, and that this might be a desirable solution for the church. Later, his ideas about the arrangement that should follow the State Church became even more radical. At first, he thought that here should be established a free church with a structure and organization as similar as possible to the church already operating in the country, even though the synod must take over the Parliament’s role as the church’s legislator. During his later years he believed that congregations should operate independently and decide among themselves upon the nature of their association.
