PRODUCTION AND OUALITY TESTS
OF ICELANDIC GRASS SEED
Klemenz Kr. Kristjánsson
'I lie most common cultivated grasses in Iceland have been tested for seed pro-
duction at the Experimental Station Sámsstaðir during a period of 38 years.
Fifteen species of grasses have been grown in seed production tests and
observations made on the effect of soil types, application of fertilizers and seed-
ing methods on the production and quality of the seed.
The time of maturity was recorded as well as the amount of seed produced.
The quality of the seed was investigated from 1005 samples. The results of
tlie various tests, such as germination rate, total and maximum germination and
weight per 1000 seed are given in tables. In these the results are listed accord-
ing to quality in two classes. The first class includes 61% and the second class
39% of all the seecl tested.
During the period of seed investigation and cultivation of grass for seed at
Sámsstaðir some 25—26 tons of seed were produced and sold to farmers.
