■ SUMMARY
BeNTHIC COMMUNITY ON SUBTIDAL ROCKY
BOTTOMS NEAR A CATHODE DUMTING SITE
IN Straumsvík COVE
The biota of the subtidal bottoms was studied
near a dumping pit for cathode remains from an
aluminium plant in Straumsvík cove. The dump-
ing pit had been in operation for five years, when
samples were taken in 1989. The community
was studied on six transects at roughly 100 m
intervals from the pit, with the first transect on
the outer margin of the pit. On each transect,
samples were normally taken at depths of 3, 6
and 9 m. At each station photographs were taken
ol' three 50x50 cm quadrats and three large kelp
holdfasts were sampled for later analysis of
smaller invertebrates. The rocky bottom in
Straumsvík cove is diverse. Only a few rare ani-
mal species showed a significant decline in their
numbers near the dumping pit. There was there-
fore little if any indication that the structure of
Ihe subtidal community in the cove was affected
by the pit.
