SUMMARY
ThE BIOTA OF PONDS NEAR STRAUMSVÍK,
SOUTHWESTERN lCELAND
An account is given of the biota of some ponds
showing tidal fluctuations near Straumsvfk,
southwestern Iceland. Some of the ponds show
the unique combination of pronounced tidal fluc-
tuations on one hand and fresh water without
any admixture of salts from the sea on the other.
The clear zonation of plants on lava blocks at
one of these ponds is described and compared
and contrasted with zonation ol' algae as seen on
the seashore. All of the plant species found in
the intertidal ol'this pond also occur under other
more normal conditions, as is to be expected due
to the young age of the pond, being no more than
5-7 thousand years old. Some ponds in the area
show some admixture of seawater and are then
inhabited by such brackish water species as the
amphipod Gammarus duebeni. Much remains
to be known about the biota of these very inter-
esting ponds at Straumsvík.
