SUMMARY
Konráð Gíslason was one of the leading figures in the cultural renaissance of Iceland
in the 19th century, although he spent most of his adult life in Copenhagen. He stud-
ied at the University of Copenhagen, both law and philology (Icelandic or Nordic
studies), but soon dedicated his life to the study of the (old) Icelandic language and
literature and became professor of Nordic languages at the University of Copenhagen
in 1862. He worked on various editions of Old Icelandic literature, was one of the edi-
tors of the extremely influential Icelandic journal Fjölnir (Copenhagen 1835-1847),
wrote an Icelandic grammar etc., but the present article concentrates dictionary pro-
jects were never finished, a Danish-Icelandic dictionary and worked for (or with)
Richard Cleasby and Guðbrandur Vigfússon on their well known Icelandic-English
Dictionary. His contribution to the latter can be seen from manuscripts in Det arna-
magnæanske institut in Copenhagen and in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. It would
be an interesting research project to study these manuscripts in greater detail, e.g. the
relationship between the Bodleian manuscript and the original edition of the Cleasby-
Vigfússon dictionary.
