And although the olde Woman in the beginninge resisted Iulietta hir
intent, yet in the ende she knew so wel how to persuade and win hir,
that she promised in all that she was able to do, to be at hir commaund-
ment.1
En þegar þau eru gift hvetur hún þau áfram „the Olde woman came in the
meane time, and sayd unto them: “He that wasteth time in talke, recove-
reth the same to late. [...], behold (quoth shee) a campe which I have made
ready.”2 Það er hins vegar Brooke sem leggur drögin að persónu henn-
ar eins og hún birtist hjá Shakespeare. Orðaflaumur fóstrunnar, og mörg
atriði sem þar koma fram, s.s. lýsingin á Júlíu þegar hún var lítil og áherslan
á að fóstran hafi gefið henni brjóst, er að finna hjá honum og dómur hans
á fóstrunni er:
But when these Beldams sit at ease upon theyr tayle:
The day and eke the candle light before theyr talke shall fayle.
Aitd part they say is true, and part they do devise:
Yet boldly do they chat of both when no man checkes theyr lyes.
Then he [Romeus] vi. crownes of gold out of his pocket drew:
And gave them her, a slight reward (quod he) and so, adiew.
In seven yeres twise tolde she had not bowd so lowe,3
Sú staðreynd að Rómeó gefur henni peninga breytir persónu hennar tölu-
vert. Það er ekki ástin á Júlíu eða sannfæringarkraftur hennar sem verður
drifkrafturinn í gjörðum fóstrunnar heldur græðgi. Þetta gerir hana að nei-
kvæðari persónu hjá Brooke en hjá Painter. En þrátt íyrir að margir meg-
inþættirnir í persónu fóstrunnar hjá Shakespeare séu komnir frá Brooke
þá er grundvallarmunur á þeim. Persóna fóstrunnar hjá Shakespeare er
fyrst og fremst fyndin og það er viss hlýja í lýsingunni á henni enda þegar
Rómeó gefur henni peninga eru viðbrögð hennar önnur:
ROMEO: [...] Here is for your pains.
NURSE: No truly, sir, not a penny.
ROMEO: Go to, I say you shall.'*
