berculosis 17 (14), tuberculosis of the urinary and generative organs
2 (3), other organs 1 (6).
7. Leprosy is steadily decreasing, as may be seen from the following
survey for 1922—1931:

8. Hijdatide disease. There are notified fewer cases than ever before,
but the death-rate does not decrease correspondingly (cf. tables
V—VI).

9. Cancer. The notification of cancer patients is still very defective.
The number of deahts uearly exceeds the number of notified cases bv
half (cf. tahles V and VI).

In addition to the cancer deaths reported here, 9 persons died of
sarcoma and other malignant growths.
Of 94 cancer patients in hospitals this year there were 39 cases of
cancer of the stomach, or 41,6%.
10. Maternity (see also tables X—XI). The total number of births
in 1931 was: 2794 born alive and 62 stillborn, or 21,7(4 of the total
number.

The death rate 1931 is 3,2 per 1000 children born alive. The distribu-
tion of accidents of childbirth is as follows: Puerperal hæmorrage 4,
puerperal covulsions 1, ectopian gestation 1.
11. Care of Infants. Infant mortality is on the whole very low in Ice-
land. This year shows, however, a slightly higher figure than the pre-
ceding years, 49,4 per 1000 horn alive (1930: 45,2(4, 1929: -i3%c). The
care of infants may he said to be fairlv good and a great majority of the
children are breast-fed. The midwives have made out a report con-
cerning 2538 infants born during the year (out of 2794 births). In 2446
cases the nutrition of the infants after birth is reported as follows
(Reykjavik figures in brackets):
