A new leprosy case was met with
this year, the only one since 1934.
The new patient, a woman 58 years
old, had lived with leprotics in her
early childhood, and again some 20
years ago.

These figures are based upon mon-
tbly reports from physicians, but in
the annual report on the disease,
which comprises all medical districts
in this country, 20 cases are reported,
most of them very old people, perhaps
only with some or other remains of
the disease.

In addition to the monthly reports
from district medical officers, on
which the above survey is based,
medical officers in all districts have
rnade out a list showing the incidence
of malignant tumors (lymphogranulo-
matosis included: 5 cases) during the
year. According to these tables there
are 378 such patients. On pp. 100—
101 these malignant tumors are classi-
fied according to location.
11. School Inspection. In Iceland an
obligatory medical examination of all
school-children takes place at the be-
ginning of each session, especially
with regard to tuberculosis. At the
same time the sanitary condition of
the schools is inspected and all mat-
ters bearing upon the health of the
children are looked into. The inspec-
tion is undertaken by thc district
medical officers. In Reykjavík, howe-
ver, there are special school medical
officers. Table X shows the result of
school inspection in the whole coun-
try, comprising 15048 children.
12. Maternity (cf. tables XII—XIV).
The total number of births in 1951
was 4061, 3999 born alive and 62 still-
born (15.3 per 1000 of the total num-
ber).

The maternity death rate 1951 was
0.25 per 1000 children born. The
distribution of accidents of childbirth
is shown on p. 68.
13. Artificial Abortion (cf. table
XII).
During the year 59 artificial abor-
tions took place under the Birth Con-
trol Act, whicli came into operation
in 1935 (in the preceding year the
number had been 57). In 21 out of
these 59 cases social as well as medi-
cal indications had been taken into
consideration.
