höggvið á steina en annað letur. Frá því að notkun rúnaleturs hætti
hlýtur það að hafa varðveitzt á þann hátt, að menn hafa skrifað
það upp í syrpur sínar, hver eftir öðrum. Þegar komið er fram á
15.-17. öld hlýtur það að hafa verið orðið stirðnað, af því að það
hafði ekki verið lifandi letur í margar aldir, og á löngum tíma og
við margar uppskriftir hafa slæðzt inn margar villur og því voru
sum rúnamerkin þá orðin röng. Syrpurnar átti efnafólkið, einkum
það, sem stóð á gömlum merg. Rúnaletrið var eflaust orðið sjaldgæft
þegar komið var fram á 17. öld, og ekki hefur galdratrúin, sem þá
var í algleymingi, örvað viðhald þess. Það hefur því eflaust ekki verið
margra fyrirmynda að leita fyrir rúnastöfunum handa þeim, sem
höggva áttu á steinana, en fornlyndir menn hafa þá þó enn lumað
á forskriftum.
SUMMARY
Runic Stones and Personál History.
The earliest gravestones in Icelandic churchyards are for the most part oblong
prismatic basalt columns, unworked but for the inscriptions which are carved with
runes. These runic stones, never very numerous, can be roughly dated to the period
1300-1700. In most cases the inscriptions are very brief. Sometimes they are limited
to the formel „Here rests N. N.“, but quite often a few words like „God guard his
(her) soul“ are added.
Anders Bæksted, in his book Islands runeindskrifter, Bibliotheca Arnamagnæana
II, Copenhagen 1942, made a very thorough and valuable survey of Icelandic runic
inscriptions. The present author only aims at examining the runie stones from the
point of view of genealogy and personal history, a side not paid much attention to
by Bæksted. The outcome is that a good many persons, whose names we read on
the stones, cannot possibly be indentified among people known from medieval
documents. Others, however, are easily identifiable, and the author has succeeded in
Proving the identity of quite a few in addition. In a few cases the inscriptions add
u valuable piece of information to the knowledge available in other sources. The
author points out that in more than one case a close family relationship can be
established between two or more persons honoured with runic stones on their
graves. Generally speaking these people belonged to the well-to-do class.
