nordmændene skiller sig ud fra Danerriget. Knud, der nu frygter mod-
standere på to sider, indgår forbund med den svenske kong Olaf, Eriks
søn, for med hans hjælp at undertvinge først England, dernæst Norge.
HN følger ikke denne fremstilling, men viser til gengæld i sin beret-
ning om, at Olaf den Hellige ledsagede Knud den Store og den svenske
konge i et nyt angreb mod England, tilknytning til normannisk-engelsk
historieskrivning, således som det nedenfor vil blive nærmere omtalt. Mu-
ligvis for at imødegå Adam giver HN en forhistorie for Olafs deltagelse
i toget. Efter vikingefærden besøger Olaf Knud i Danmark,49 hvor han
modtages med stor hæder, og de to tidligere kampfæller drikker fost-
broderskab. Vejen er nu åbnet for Olafs deltagelse, og forfatteren kan
atter følge Adam:

I HNs følgende beretning om angrebet på London og Æthelreds død
er visse elementer sikkert hentet fra Adam, men hovedsagen i skildringen,
Olafs dristige indsats ved erobringen af London (for hvilken han da også
får æren), må være norrøn tradition50 eller (delvis) forfatterens egen
konstruktive fantasi. I beretningen om de 5 slag med kong Edmund på
9 måneder, aftalen om rigets deling, Edmunds død og Knuds giftermål
med Elfgiva er der atter tilknytning til engelsk historieskrivning.51 Der-
imod må den følgende skildring af Olaf den Helliges trolovelse med den
