orsök hafa reynst vera smitsjúkdómar. Má þar
nefna hermannaveiki (Legionnaires disease) sem
reyndist vera af völdum Legionellapneumophila
og maga- og skeifugarnasár sem reyndust vera af
völdum Helicobacterpylori. Með nýrri þekkingu
er hægt að lækna þessa sjúkdóma. I töflu 3 er
listi yfir sjúkdóma og sýkla sem fundist hafa á
síðustu árum. Líklegt er að fleiri sjúkdómar eigi
eftir að reynast vera smitsjúkdómar. Vaxandi
þekking og tækni í sameindalíffræði gera okkur
nú kleift að finna örverur sem er að finna í litlu
magni og erfitt eða ómögulegt er að rækta. Lengi
hafa menn talið líklegt að alvarlegir sjúkdómar
eins og iktsýki, sarco-idosis og Crohns
sjúkdómur kunni að vera smitsjúkdómar.
Nýlegar rannsóknir benda einnig til þess að
bakterían Chlamydia pneumoniae eigi þátt i
kransæðasjúkdómum(lO). Það erþví ljós að enn
er mikið starf óunnið í sýklafræði, bæði hvað
varðar sýklalyfjaónæmi og “nýja smitsjúkdóma”.
