whole the burial customs observed in this place may be looked upon as typical
for Iceland in the Viking Age.
A brief survey of individual graves:
Grave 1, 470 x 80—90 cm, much disturbed, SSW-NNE, remains of human
bones in SW-end, skeletons of two horses in the other (fig. 12), Gravegoods
(fig. 13): Two beads, one of amber, one of glass, three gaming pieces of
stone, balance-weight oí lead, irow fragments.
Grave 2, very badly damaged, remains of bones from man and horse, an
iron strap buckle.
Grave 3, fig. 14, almost intact, 360x100 cm, SW-NE; in the SW end the
skeleton of a young woman, horse skeleton in the foot end. Gravegoods, fig.
15: A knife blade of iron, fire steel, fragments of a pair of scissors, some
iron fragments, charcoal. With the horse two strap buckles and rivets.
Grave 4, fig. 16, much disturbed, 175x75 cm, SW-NE, a few bones, no
traces of a horse.
Grave 5, 160x70, N-S, much disturbed, a few bones from a child, no horse
skeleton, gravegoods: a knife blade and two iron nails.
Grave 6, fig. 17, 360 x 70 cm, SW-NE, the SW end badly damaged; horse
skeleton in the NE end. Remains of gravegoods unimportant, except a piece
of iron with a row of teeth fig. 18., possibly a tool for making decorations
on leather.
Grave 7, fig. 19, 320 x 70 cm, SW-NE, disturbed, scattered bones from
man and horse. Gravegoods, figs. 20—22: at least 7 balance-weights of lead,
a piece of flint, many iron fragments from artifacts and horse gear, among
them 43 small rivets with rounded bronzecovered heads, most likely from
a saddle.
Grave 8, fig. 23, somewhat disturbed, 400 x 75—90 cm, SW-NE, man’s bones
scattered in the SW end, horse skeleton intact in the NE-end. Gravegoods:
a spear head, fig. 24, iron knife, fragments of a bone comb.
Grave 9, fig. 25, much disturbed, 370x60 cm, SW-NE, scattered bones from
man and horse. Gravegoods, fig. 26: 25 beads, one of amber, thread upon a
silver ring, the rest from glass of various colours, an iron pincet, a heap of
small calcedons, 58 in all, a piece of wax.
Grave 10, fig. 27, disturbed, 400 x 70 cm, SW-NE, man’s bones scattered,
horse skeleton intact. Gravegoods, fig. 28: 5 glass beads, whetstone, iron
fragments, parts of a bone comb; with horse skeleton two strap buckles
and 5 rivets.
11. Litli-Dunhagi, Arnarneshreppur, EyjafiarOarsýsla: A find of human bones,
Presumably the remains of a completely destroyed Viking Age grave.
12. Hólar, öxnadalshreppur, Eyjafjaröarsýsla: A find of some human bones,
doubtless the remains of a destroyed Viking Age grave.
